This ibex balanced at a safe distance ahead of us as we crossed the ridge pictured here.
The light-footedness with which these proud animals master the steepest passages is quite remarkable. 
Did you know that at the beginning of the 19th century, the Alpine ibex was extinct in the Italian area of the Gran Paradiso except for about 100 remaining individuals? Nowadays, thanks to reintroductions, they are regularly encountered in the Swiss Alps.
